A review by the Cochrane Foundation indicates that treatment with bupropion appears to be more effective in maintaining abstinence treatments derived from nicotine. The so-called “stop smoking pills” are effective and safe, but recommended that the prescription and monitoring is done by a medical professional, they may present adverse effects and interactions with other drugs.

A new drug, varenicline, has also demonstrated its utility in the cessation of snuff, according to a study published in the last congress of the American Heart Association (AHA). This drug acts on brain receptors by a mechanism different from other drugs used for this purpose.
According to results presented at the conference of the AHA, smokers treated with varenicline doubled the chances of success compared with other available treatments. The study reveals that at 12 weeks, 44% of smokers treated with varenicline were able to quit compared with 30% that achieved with bupropion and 17% with placebo. After a year were abstinent 22% of those treated with varenicline, bupropion 16.4% and 8.4% with placebo.
