Robert Lanza as A Scientist
Robert Lanza is one among the many leading scientists of the world. Currently, he has been serving at the post of the Vice President for Research and Scientific Development at the Advanced Cell Technology. So far, there are more than two dozen scientific books and hundreds of white paper publications in the name of Lanza. He is associated with the department of the Institute of Regenerative Medicine, Wake Forest University School of Medicine as Adjunct Professor and holds many patents in his name.
Robert Lanza is regarded by many as a controversial scientist because he and a group of scientists were the first ones to clone a human embryo. He was also the first one to show to the world that nuclear transplantation can be used in the reversal of ageing in humans. He is also credited as the first one to engineer an organ tissue from cloned human cells. Shinya Yamanaka of Japan created the first stem cells from human skin cells in 2006. However, his discovery of the iPS cells was not practical, as he injected the cells with four key proteins which used viruses as carriers. This method of cell production could cause many types of cancers.
He and his team have shown to the world that it is possible to generate a stem cell by isolating the proteins and “tagging” them, so that the proteins could easily slip into the cells. Extensive tests at the laboratory seem to suggest that Robert Lanza and his colleagues could have found a cure for the blindness occurring due to macular degeneration or retinitis pigmentosa. Further research is required according to him to enable this method of treatment to be made available to masses.
