How is Diabetic Nephropathy?
What is the prognosis?
If microalbuminuria is detected at an early stage, treatment can begin, thus reducing the risk of disease progression and worse. Only a small number of patients experience a progressive reduction in kidney function and just requiring treatment by dialysis or kidney transplantation.
How is diabetic nephropathy?
Treatment of diabetic nephropathy includes the following:
- Normalization of blood glucose levels with diabetes pills or insulin.
- If microalbuminuria is detected, is indicated the administration of medication to control blood pressure, even if the patient does not have high levels of blood pressure.
- If the patient is hypertensive, there must be strict control of blood pressure levels, often using combinations of several drugs.
- If kidney function is reduced significantly, to reduce the amount of dietary protein. In the final stages of kidney disease on dialysis is needed, which can take two forms: regular hemodialysis or continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.
- Finally, in established nephropathy, where renal function has deteriorated badly, you may need a kidney transplant.
