Head Injury in Children Prevention

The duration of symptoms depends on the type and severity of the injury. For example, pain caused by minor head injuries usually lasts only a few minutes. Symptoms of a concussion often goes away within minutes or hours after the injury, but a child may have symptoms of confusion, memory loss, difficulty concentrating, headache, dizziness and fatigue for several days or more.

This set of symptoms called postconcussional syndrome can sometimes last for weeks or months. The most severe brain injuries may require longer hospitalizations for rehabilitation. Rarely, these cases can lead to death.

Prevention

To help prevent brain injury in children:

* Never leave your baby alone or on the changing table, bed, chair or elevated surfaces, instead put your baby in a crib or playpen, or on the floor if you should leave it alone
* Do not put your baby in a walker because these devices can lead to falls and serious injuries
* Install window guards on windows and security gates placed near the doors and stairs
* If your baby crawls, remove carpets and furniture edges peaked in areas where your child plays
* If your child plays in a yard, be sure to place a shock-absorbent surface (a thick layer of rubber or a deep layer of sand, sawdust) under all play equipment
* Use infant car seats appropriate for their age and weight of your baby until it can be placed without difficulty a seat belt
* Make sure your child always wear a helmet of good fit if you walk in bike or motorcycle. Make a course on safe use of bicycles, if available, can be very useful
* If your child plays sports, have him wear a protective head and suitable for professional use, the helmets are essential in football, baseball, ice hockey, skiing, inline skate, skateboard, skateboarding , bicycle, motorbike and snowboarding (surfing on ice)
* Do not let your child play with trampolines unless you care
* When shopping, put a belt on the seat of the shopping cart where you put your child to be more protected, never lose sight of your child while on the shopping cart and avoid placing the child within shopping cart basket
