A new American research seems to shed light on the relationship between HIV and alcohol. This report, published by The Lancet, says that countries with higher levels of HIV patients have at the same time, high alcohol consumption.

According to Dr. Katherine Fritz, the properties of alcohol may explain part of the widely observed association between alcohol use and risky sexual behavior. This would involve sex without adequate protection, having sex with different partners and the commercialization of sex.

Past studies had found that alcohol abuse is common among people with HIV. As mentioned, those who abuse this substance are more likely to perform risky behaviors. For this reason, researchers believe they have a higher risk of acquiring the disease.

As a solution the researchers propose to develop strategies such as those implemented by the gay bars in the United States during the 90s. These complemented the HIV prevention programs with those to combat alcohol abuse.

Moreover, the abuse of alcohol also increases the risk of sexual violence against women (by their partners). For this reason researchers believe that it is also necessary to conduct more studies on gender and alcohol abuse.
